Mark Dignam is a poet. Mark Dignam loves to tell
jokes. Mark Dignam is a musical gormandizer. Mark
Dignam is the most down-to-earth person you will
ever meet from Dublin.
Mark Dignam started his musical career modestly,
at age seventeen, busking on Grafton Street in
Dublin, Ireland. His name became steadily more
familiar at home, but instead of settling into
a comfortable environment and enjoying his initial
success, Mark wanted more; he wanted to share
his music with more people and explore the world
and its possibilities. In the new century, Mark
moved to the United States, and eventually landed
in Pittsburgh, where he now makes his home.
Mark's ambulant and adventurous life is reflected
in his songs, as is the case with the best songwriters.
One hears honesty reflected not only in the lyrics,
but also in the tone. Mark's voice, layered with
simple and perfect guitar chords, is like a crisp
wind on a fall afternoon: familiar and sometimes
slightly disquieting. The listener's ears perk
up and stand at attention, waiting to hear what
more he has to say.
Mark's last two full-length albums, In a Time
of Overstatement and …And One For All, were
received positively by both fans in his homeland
and Pittsburgh locals. His wanderlust resulted
in an ambitious international touring schedule
to support these albums. That's how Mark caught
the ears of Times Beach Records. The artist and
label felt meant for each other, because Times
Beach's grass-roots approach to the industry matched
Mark's earnest attitude. He doesn't strive for
fame or money: he strives for excellence and
truth.
On Mark's new material, he seems more content
with the life he has built for himself. Grab a
hot coffee (with a dash of whiskey), and don't
be the last to hear this veracious music.
“Mark Dignam...
combines personal observations with a raging,
passionate political conscience, showing the potential…
to join the front ranks of contemporary Irish
folk songwriters.”
